Here's What We Do! Our Humane Society has been in operation since 1886, which makes it one of Indiana’s oldest service organizations. We are the largest animal care facility in this part of the region, handling between 7,000 and 10,000 animals per year. Our services cover a wide spectrum, including providing Humane Officers who handle animal control calls for local municipalities and our county, enforcing city and county ordinances regarding animal ownership, treatment and licensing, taking in lost, stray, turned in or abandoned animals, providing quarantine for all bite cases, and running a large no-kill adoption center for dogs, cats, and some smaller pets. We contract with St. Joseph County as well as the city of Mishawaka and other local municipalities for our animal control services, then after three to five days, the animals we have are our responsibility. The funds we receive from these contracts cover only the animal control services, and we have to raise the money to take care of the over 400 animals we have on-site at one time. The Humane Society offers a Pet Safe program, which allows members of the community who have had health problems, disasters such as house fires, crime victims and domestic violence victims to house their pets with us for free for two weeks until they can safely take their pets back home. Additionally, we provide transportation for elderly members of our community with regard to pet care, and we have an emergency pet food bank for pet owners who need extra help to feed their animals. Along with the work described, we work to educate the local community regarding animal welfare, anti-cruelty efforts, proper animal care, dog-fighting and other issues relating to our humane mission. We make presentations in the local public and private schools and have a large cadre of volunteers from those schools as well as the local colleges and universities such as Indiana University-South Bend, St. Mary’s College , the University of Notre Dame and Purdue University school of Technology So Bend. Recently, we opened a brand new dog park here at our facility. It is Mishawaka’s and St Joe County’s first dog park, and is open to any member of the Humane Society who signs up and provides proof that their dog(s) are current on rabies, distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, and kennel cough vaccinations. We need proof of the animal being whipworm free also. Anyone who wants to socialize their dogs, get them some exercise and even work on some obedience equipment can join the Humane Society and come play in the park! Our mission is: To instill reverence for all life and to enhance the human/animal bond through the compassionate care of animals and community education.
