Here's What We Do! Circa Arts Gallery is housed in a building that was built in 1904 by Charles McCormick. Over the years it has been used as a drug store, grocery, radio shop, flooring and tile business, and finally, an aluminum siding company until 1988. Kathy Reddy White and Gary White bought the building in January of 1999. They rehabilitated the entire building, starting with the two upstairs apartments that hadn't been occupied for over twenty years. They stripped the floors, walls, and ceilings; insulated and replaced all the heating, plumbing, and electrical systems. The apartments and the east side main floor retail space was ready for occupancy in November of 1999. The west side main retail space, which was to house Kathy's gallery, was finished in time for a holiday show in December of 2000. In January, Kathy and a core group of artists opened the CircaArts Gallery with limited hours. The name of the gallery reflects their mutual interest in antiques and art. Kathy opened the gallery full time (six days a week) on December 1, 2002. The gallery currently represents over 60 local artists. Circa Arts Gallery is located on the southwest corner of Colfax Avenue and Hill Street in the historic Charles McCormick Building. Circa Arts is considered the gateway to the East Race and Downtown South Bend. A Mural Draws Eyes to Downtown's East Side: The scene is a turn-of-the-century version of the shops that are currently housed in the building - Circa Arts Gallery and Inspire Me! (a women's clothing and accessories shop). The mural also features a glimpse into the past by depicting the East Race gateway framing a bridge leading to the South Bend Woolen Factory.
